From Concept Drawing to Production Floor: Custom Workstations Built by Rocky Mountain Motion Control
When a new production line is on the way, the workstations have to be right from the first shift. They need the right dimensions, the right features, and a structure that holds up to daily use. Here's a look at a recent project that shows how the process works.
The Challenge
A customer came to us needing custom workstations for a new production line they were developing for their own end customer. They arrived well prepared, with detailed dimensional requirements and a concept drawing showing the layout they had in mind.
That gave our team a solid starting point. From their drawing, we developed an initial design and provided budgetary pricing. This early step lets customers confirm the direction and the budget before committing to a full build.
Beyond the core workstation, the customer needed a few functional additions:
- Part bins to keep components organized and within reach
- Upper dividers to separate work zones
- A paper dispenser roller for work instructions, labels, or protective wrap
We built all three into the final design, so the workstations arrived ready for the line rather than needing add-ons later.
Designing for Durability and Value
A good build is more than matching a drawing. It's choosing materials and hardware that fit how the station will actually be used. These were our key recommendations:
A tough, chemical-resistant work surface. We specified 1/2" HDPE panels for the work surfaces. HDPE stands up to impacts, abrasion, and many common shop chemicals, which makes it a reliable choice for a busy production environment.
Strength without the weight or cost. For other panel areas, we used Lite composite panels. These have a honeycomb core and an aluminum exterior, giving strong, rigid panels at a lower cost and weight than solid alternatives.
A compact, robust frame. The structure is built from 30 Series aluminum T-slot profiles. The 30mm x 30mm profile keeps the frame compact and cost-effective while still providing plenty of structural strength. Like all T-slot framing, it's easy to modify or expand if the line changes down the road.
Brackets built for flexibility. We chose 30 Series slotted inside corner brackets with dual support for their versatility and ease of assembly. This helps keep build time down and makes future adjustments simple.
Smooth, snag-free surfaces. We countersunk every bolt head on the work surfaces. Operators get a flat, clean surface with nothing to catch parts, gloves, or sleeves.
Refining the Design During the Build
Part of the value of a build service is having experienced eyes on the project from start to finish. During fabrication, our team noticed some movement in the upper shelving structure. It was a small issue, but one that could get worse over years of daily use.
Rather than ship it as-is, we revised the design. We added support legs that tie the upper shelving directly into the main frame. The change eliminated the movement and reinforced the entire workstation, giving the customer a more rigid, stable assembly for the long term.
This is the kind of problem that's easy to miss on paper and easy to fix during the build. It's much harder to fix once the stations are on the production floor.
The Result
The customer received a set of fully assembled custom workstations. They matched the original layout, included every requested feature, and were made stronger through improvements found during fabrication. The stations were ready to support the new production line from day one.
